ABOUT
  • A secular, non-affiliated charity, Willing Hearts is wholly run by volunteers, apart from a handful of staff. It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about 5,000 daily meals to over 40 locations island wide, 365 days a year.

Volunteer

As a volunteer, you will be helping with the preparation of ingredients for the meals. This would include tasks like peeling, washing and chopping vegetables. These tasks ensure the meals can be cooked on time and delivered to the delivered to be beneficiaries by meal time.

 

Dress Code

  • Wear closed-toed shoes (i.e. sneakers, tennis shoes, etc). No slippers, flip flops and sandals
  • T-shirts must have sleeves and one that you would not mind getting stains on (Red YCS Shirt). No tank tops.
  • Long pants, Bermudas, culottes, tights, etc, are allowed as long as they are not at or tank tops.
  • No jewellery. Not even earrings, bracelets and rings
  • You MUST put on a *disposable hair net while in the kitchen
  • Put on *gloves when handling food, except when handling vegetables
  • As to prevent stains on your clothes, *aprons are highly recommended - you may choose to bring your own.

Youth-Overall-In-Charge (YOIC)

As a YOIC, you will be in charge coordinating the event between the staff at Willing Hearts and our volunteers.

 

Your role includes:

  • Taking attendance at the guard house
  • Ensuring that your volunteers have taken their temperature and filled up the declaration form before entering Willing Hearts' premises
  • Passing the YCS red shirt to new volunteers
  • Leading the volunteers to the vegetable station
  • Conveying the information or instructions from the staff to the volunteers

 

Process

Registration:

  1. Register your attendance with the security at the main gate area.
  2. All visitors (including volunteers) are to fill up a declaration form and to have their temperatures taken

Dispatching of volunteers:

  1. Direct those who need to change to the Red YCS Shirt to the restrooms to change first, before coming back to you at the main gate area
  2. Direct the volunteers to the vegetable station located at the back of Willing Heart and inform the staff of the volunteers' arrival and the number of pax
    • The vegetables station is located behind the kitchen
    • (The volunteers can be dispatched on a small group basis from the main gate, depending on their arrival timing)

     

  3. Ensure that everyone adheres to the food hygiene practices, please refer to the appendix.

  4. Once all the volunteers have arrived, you may help out at the vegetable station as well

Wrap Up:

  1. Keep track of the time: remind both the Willing Hearts staff and the YCS volunteers half an hour before the end of the activity so that they may begin cleaning up their work stations (i.e. sweeping floors, disposing all vegetable scraps into trash bags provided, etc)
  2. Remind volunteers to clean up after themselves as the place is run by volunteers
